[ADMIN] Confusing Konglish words - scandal, wannabe, mannerism

As a blogger translating Korean-English, I feel like these three Konglish words - scandal, wannabe, mannerism - don't get enough explanations and could be confusing at times. So time I'm going to elaborate them. Scandal (스캔들, seu-kaen-deul) Probably the word that confuse international fans the most. In English, the definition of 'scandal' is "an action or event regarded as morally or legally wrong and causing general public outrage."  In Korean, the word means 'dating rumors' exclusively .  It doesn't contain the negative connotations that the English word has. When so and so are rumored to be dating, Korean media would write "There's a scandal between the two". Sam Hammington had also pointed out that Koreans use the word wrongly. On a rare occasion, I do see Korean media using the word to mean a 'political scandal', but for 99% of the time, it's used for dating rumors between celebrities. Example from Radio Star M...

'Rock' is unpopular in Korea due to idol music and other factors?

Pann : Pushed by idol music... 'Korean rock' lost its spark Source: Segye Ilbo via Naver 1. [+2280, -150] Since years ago? The fact is that since before, only certain people listened to rock. It's not like every young person used to listen to rock. Rock was never a mainstream genre. 2. [+490, -115] It's not just Korea, it's the same for other countries. For decades, we've had no rock star and the listeners are called rock losers who look down on other genres. Rock is falling behind naturally. Don't blame their lack of talent on others. 3. [+369, -61] It was never popular though 4. [+338, -89] If there's no popularity or economic demand, it's bound to fall behind. It's the same as unskilled workers getting fired and bad restaurants closing. 5. [+409, -236] The music sucks though... Is there a rock band in our country that produces good music like Coldplay? 6. [+86, -7] It's not because we can't produce rock. It's because rock d...

My generation can't deny that SNSD is the top girl group especially during Gee but elementary kids don't know... 3. [+65, -6] There was no girl group in 2016 that could beat SNSD. There's no other group that had many promotions like dramas, solo debuts, and variety shows. 4. [+46, -1] People are so young here, how can you say SNSD shouldn't be listed ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ 5. [+34, -1] Amazing that SNSD is there for 9 years

[+21, -1] So many people enjoy and like BTS' music, there's nothing to be afraid, Namjoon-ah. Enjoy it and feel it. You deserve to be happy. 5. [+11, -1] I didn't expect it to reach 100K listeners... I don't think it's just Armys. A lot of non-fans seem to listen to them since BTS started charting on the billboard and became known in the US. 6. [+8, -1] So happy, there are many good songs ã… ã…  And Wanna One is doing really well, too!

[+30, -1] A lot of people say it looks like an adult item... How can they do this to a girl group's lightstick... 6. [+30, -0] Of all the idol lightsticks I've seen on Pann, this is the worst-looking lightstick. 7. [+29, -2] Blackpink has a classy image, the lightstick doesn't match at all... Fan-made lightstick is prettier. 8. [+29, -1] Am I the only one who got dirty thoughts? 9. [+20, -0] Is that a massage stick ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ 10. [+16, -0] It looks like nipples...

YG revealed to have lost 11 billion won due to the failure of 'MIX9'

Pann : YG Yang Hyun Suk revealed to have lost 11 billion won (The production loss was 7 billion won and there was another 4 billion won loss after) 1. [+75, -0] He would've made profits if Winner, Blackpink, iKON, Seungri, and Lee Hi had comebacks instead. 2. [+48, -0] He shouldn't have done this show and made artists have comebacks instead, tsk tsk... 3. [+44, -0] It's time for him to retire. Even if the show is boring, there's people still willing to watch it because he has fans. Yet the show got 0% ratings... He lost his senses. All he has is his pride. 4. [+12, -0] He said he's gonna retire when he loses his senses. Why isn't he retiring yet? He should take care of his artists instead. When is Lee Hi ever coming back? 5. [+11, -0] The Unit didn't do well either but they still debuted and promoted hard. They managed to be a #1 nominee on The Show. Yang Hyun Suk is so irresponsible. He shouldn't have started the show at all. 6. [+6, -0] This is...

[+122, -5] I love how GFriend beat the two sajaegi songs and won #1 2. [+44, -6] The #1 nominees are so funny ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ 3. [+40, -64] That's because Inkigayo counts Youtube views a lot~ Don't try to bash Momoland with this ã…‹ã…‹ 4. [+24, -0] Seeing GFriend's Youtube views and stuff, I really don't think they do any sajaegi. 5. [+20, -0] GFriend is saving justice after Twice 6. [+19, -0] Twice last time, and GFriend this time... Seeing how GFriend is winning #1 through the manipulated nominees, it shows they're still very popular.
